Monthly Update 3.4

Hello all, and welcome back to the monthly update!

I to catch up with John and Anne last night just after John had wrapped the 5th cross Atlantic game. You can catch up with their status on the twitter feed, it seems at the moment they are having some issues with Fire...

There are minor tweaks to the game from the testing games, but most of the feedback has been positive. The Hunter Aspect remains a problem child and is still is a work in progress, the challenge not having it double up on things other aspects already do and not making them boring. More to come as we get closer to finalizing Hunter.

John has been traveling a bit this past month but has been working on what will either be an additional chapter or section of the book. This section will be advice as to how to run a game of Hero's Journey, as well as discussing the themes and spirit of the game.

On to more concrete progress, the talent augments are done. Spheres augments are still a work in progress. The bulk of the work right now lay with the Sphere augments.

This month Anne will have a few weeks off due to the Easter holiday, so she will have the ability to focus more on working on augments.

Thank you all for your patience, and I will be back next month!

  1. And another frustrating update that says "still working, no end in sight", as we near the 2-year anniversary of the original kickstarter. My enthusiasm is officially on life support.

    1. I think thats a completely valid opinion. Our situation is not unheard of though. There are projects with a lot more money and a lot more people working on them that are much farther behind. We're busting ass, but theres only so much we can do.

  2. Glad to see things are still marching onwards guys! Sorry Hunter is remaining an absolute pain for you, hope some inspiration strikes to help get Hunter out of its weirdness.

    1. It will, Im sure. We're still getting everything in as final a form as possible and we're sure hunter will be there before we're done with everything.

  3. I've written about the delays before, but I feel I have to comment again. I know you guys are doing almost all of the work yourselves, but if you are so stuck with the Hunter aspect [or anything else], maybe you need some outside input to break the creative logjam? Obviously you are in a loop, and your existing play-testers don't have any new thoughts on the topic. I want to own HJ, and it's really hard for me to stay positive when there doesn't seem to be light at the end of the tunnel. At this point, I'd honestly rather have something in my hand, than wait another 6-9 months for a "perfect" set of rules. I know you want it to be the best game you can make, but it's been a long wait for a first-time system to get up and running. When Exalted 3rd edition ran [ridiculously] long in development after the Kickstarter, people were pissed, but there was an existing game [1st and 2nd editions] and a thriving community to keep the torch lit. There isn't one for HJ, so it's tough to tide ourselves over with sneak peeks and tidbits - especially when it looks like Scion 2nd Edition may well be out within 6-8 months from today. Please, guys - we need something concrete sooner rather than later, because we'd all like to try running the game for ourselves.

    1. We've definitely been brainstorming ways to make this happen. The hunter logjam is something we kinda keep in the back of our minds. Our day to day is filled with small edits and getting everything ready for a finished book. We havnt really sat down and NAILED at hunter subsytem much, but we wont let it stop us from finishing if we get to the end and its not done.

Exalted 3 still isnt out. I dont use that as an excuse, but it definitly shows that even established companies with lots more people and money can be stuck in similar situations. You are right that the existing game/community can keep the excitement up though, thats a very real thing.

We are looking for ways to get a playable something out there quicker. Perhaps just a mortal version in pdf so people can play something and we'll get rules for advancement out later. Nothing in stone, just stuff we're brainstorming.

    2. Scion 2.0 being in peoples hands in 8 months would be VERY surprising to me. Did they quote that somewhere?

    3. The complete Ex3 was released to the backers a few months back, but there were some MAJOR problems with the art [i.e. entire pieces directly plagiarized from other published works], so they have been doing some serious editing and re-commissioning to fix the issue. The rules themselves are complete, and have been for some time.

  4. The quote is here, from the developer. He says "this year", which is only 10 months max. http://forum.theonyxpath.com/forum/main-category/main-forum/scion/839576-onyx-path-s-scion-2nd-edition

    1. As one who is also still awaiting Exalted 3rd, i must say that you shouldn't get your hopes up when a developer says that "It'll be out soon, i promise". HJ may not have the budget that Scion 2 has but John and Anne have shown to be very dedicated and hard work. Scion 2 is using their new Sardonyx or whatever system and is sure to run into some snags at some point as well.

    3. I mean, I take most developer estimates with a grain of salt, but they've shown themselves to be hesitant to make empty promises since the Ex3 delays caused so much anger. I know you guys are working hard, but if Scion 2nd beats HJ to the shelves, that's going to be a major bummer - and a dent in your market share to boot.

  5. Well, since this isn't going anywhere still, I gotta ask: Is there any way for me to get my money back, granted I can proof I invested it? I got things coming up that require a load of it and I'm short on cash as it is, so I'd rather pass out on something I paid for and still didn't receive anything in return.
