Weekly Update 7.10

Hello Everyone,

Today's post is a little bit different, it is an update post about update posts; very meta. My job on the team is been to maintain transparency between you, the current fans of John and Anne's work, and the (hopefully) future fans of Hero's Journey. As of late I have not been doing a very good job of that.

On that score, I am sorry.

So, kicking things off with an apology, great start! The updates have not been as informative as we would like. The final push to get through Blessings just doesn't afford much in the way of substantive updates. Anne and John spent hours debating on the implications of a blessing, doesn't make for much in the way of an update.

Our weekly update meetings have begun to suffer from diminishing returns and the posts have tended towards quantity over quality. At this point you, if you've been reading consistently, have the broad strokes of the mechanics of the game, I could keep giving teasers, but again we're in a diminishing returns scenario.

So, we have fallen into a cycle of "Anne and John are working on blessings, they made progress this week, but progress is slow." You know they're working, but I don't have much to say beyond that.

With this in mind Anne, John, and I have decided to change this blog into a monthly update, I'll be posting an update on the first Friday of every month, unless something major happens. At which point I will be back crying from the mountaintop, and Anne and John will probably have beat me to the punch by doing the same on Twitter.

That being said, I still check my inbox and the forums daily for questions, continue asking them. When I get them I'll will either gather it in the monthly post, or I will seek out an answer for a quick post.

We're not the end of news though! John and Anne will be starting a new blog series, starting next week. the still being scheduled but it's looking like it will be on Friday or Monday. This new post will will talk about the ongoing test game. It will be in two parts; first it will let you know what's happening in game, second it will give John and Anne an opportunity to talk through things they have found out about systems through play.

Finally, the first Kickstarter reward game will start up in the next few weeks (date pending). That crew has decided to live stream on Twitch. As the details get more clear I will post them.

So that's it for this week. Have a great weekend!

  1. Just so you are aware - there is some rumbling over on Onyx Path's Scion forums that the game is "vapourware" because it's taking so long. I understand mechanics take a long time to work out, but going to monthly updates says to me as a fan,"it's going to be months now before we get anywhere, so don't hold your breath". I don't want to be a pain in the butt, and I'm not saying I agree with the nay-sayers, but I do want you to know how this appears to at least this one fan; Less communication, and no forum activity, and no other updates, doesn't ramp up my enthusiasm for things, or give ammo to the supporters of HJ.

    1. Thank you for the input - it's good stuff for us to know. John and I don't really frequent the Scion boards much anymore, so we haven't heard how things are over there, but I definitely understand peoples' concerns.

I agree, a monthly update does have that feel of "so forever away then", which isn't what we were hoping to do - rather, we were hoping to be able to do fewer posts that say "hey, stuff happened but it isn't really reportable" because that's aggravating in its own way, and instead post about stuff that actually [i]is[/i] happening, whether that's weekly or not.

But of course you and anybody else have a total right to misgivings - when we say things like "we'll be doing X in the future!", it's hard to be excited about that because, well, it hasn't happened yet.

We're hoping that seeing some more concrete material - a post this week about some information we've been getting out of playtests, for example, and the eventual livestream of one of the KS games - will help, but if there's something else y'all would like to see (other than "mail us the book", obviously we're trying to get that done as soon as possible), we'd love to hear about it.

    2. ...in which Anne tries to use BBCode in an HTML post. Jeepers, me.

    3. That was definitely not our intention. As Anne said, we're just moving more to substance rather than having me come out every week and say John and Anne are working.

As we get closer to a definitive release date, we will be working to help you guys get the word out.

We will still be communicating, we're just going to be doing so outside of a weekly Friday update. We are taking this seriously.

  2. It's tough. I know that almost all of the work on the game is done by you and John, so anything you do that isn't directly related to the game production, means it takes even longer for it to get out. But this means no Mythology updates, no blog posts, and so on, and so the site goes dark for long periods, with no updates, no involvement, and no forum topics, and it looks "dead". I don't know your situation regarding support/friends - do you have someone who could generate forum topics or discussions that relate to the game and its future? Is there any way the supporters could be involved in discussing the "how to" or "how should we" of mechanics for this game, or future supplements? Is there anyone who has time to post useful/creative links to sources of Mythology on the web or in libraries? Is there someone who could twitter tidbits of info? What happened to the game updates? Are you guys just too busy to play any more, or would the games give away too much info ahead of the game's release? I'm just throwing stuff at the wall, here, but I come to the site for info every day, and when I see lots of nothing, and we get told update will now be monthly, it really makes it hard to stay enthusiastic and involved. Am I making sense, or just whining? :-)

    1. I agree, what you're describing is exactly what I should be doing. It is a tough proposition to be working to promote a game that is not yet released. Our hands are tied in sharing new information, because it has reached a point of diminishing returns. We either end up repeating ourselves or we will be describing minor things that have less impact.

You are not whining, and your concern and support are greatly appreciated.

Starting next week there are going to be game weekly updates from the in-progress Hero's Journey game, and in the following weeks there will be a live streamed cross continent game which will probably be spoiler filled. We will share that as the date and time get locked in.

We're not going anywhere, we're just going to be focusing on sharing more substantive information outside of a regular Friday update.

  3. Maybe, instead of giving us rules-oriented updates, could we get "flavour" updates? Info on worship in the HJ world, or something from the official game world, or how worship has impacted things like technology, fashion, laws, travel, etc. in a place where the Gods/Goddesses and their powers/champions are real? What's architecture like? Are there wars? And who fights them? Maybe a page or two of the background information that may already be done could be previewed [since it seems to be the actual rules that are causing the holdup right now]. Even if it was feedback and ideas from the community, it would all feel like progress to something tangible.

    1. You're talking about exactly the sort of thing that we're looking to do with larger updates. Bigger drops of information aren't possible when we're updating weekly. We're aiming for more substance outside of John and Anne continue to work.

  4. Then we're all on the same page, here, which is good. :-) So this all starts next week? I'll be looking forward to it.

    1. Next week, you will have a game update for the Hero's Journey test game. The next scheduled update from me will be on August 7th. There will be other updates in between now and then though.

      Stay Tuned.

    2. If it helps, I know of at least two queued blog posts on playtesting and game recaps right now...!

  5. I mean, people may be saying that Scion is vaporware because of infrequent updates but Exalted is taking the opposite approach, with weekly updates that just say "working on it, nearly there, we promise" and that really doesn't help either. Honestly, there's no winning but to just give us the game already. :P

  6. Is there any chance we could get an update about where the product stands/how close you guys are/what exactly you have left? I know you mentioned a while back that you didn't want to post a deadline when you weren't sure of completion, but part of the reason it's feeling like vapourware is because you guys were SO AWESOME about keeping us updated constantly, and then it...fell off during the Blessings revisions (which I totally get are hard to talk about being finished without spoilers). I remember a while ago you had that counter, which was great.

    1. My apologies for the delay in response.

The counter is something I pushed for, and while awesome, isn’t really effective for explaining progress toward finishing Blessings. A number won’t give you a sense of how close or how far they are to finishing.

All remaining chapters their layouts are dependent on Blessings being finished.

The time to complete Blessings is logarithmic. John and Anne’s process was to work on the “easiest” stuff first. They would work on a domain until they hit an impasse, put it aside, and move onto something else. Now they’re at the point where only the difficult Domains and Blessings remain.

After Blessings are completed you will see the triumphant return of a counter. Once they are completed things will move in a linear fashion again.

Again, updates will still happen be happening. On the 16th you’ll start seeing game updates from the John and Anne’s in-progress test game. The next major game update (from me) will be on August 7th.

We are trying to communicate as best we can, but it is difficult with a team of two developers. Any time spent writing or working on an update, is time they’re not working on the game. It is a frustrating for them as it is to you.
